What the Experts Say II

Subverting Reality: The Role of Propaganda in 21st Century Intelligence:

“The digital information environment poses problems for conventional practitioners of propaganda” (Fitzgerald, C.W & Brantly, 2017, page 216). As the internet becomes a more prominent part of everyday life, propagandists are scrambling to find new and effective ways to spread their message. The World Wide Web makes it easy for propagandists to send out a specific piece of propaganda to millions of people almost instantly, but softens propaganda’s impact by creating a more competitive landscape when it comes to ideas competing for people’s attention. The paper states that the goals of propaganda have stayed the same, but the changes in the media landscape have forced propaganda to evolve (Fitzgerald, C.W & Brantly, 2017).  “Because the information environment is flooded with information, individuals and their communities have greater difficulty in distinguishing accurate from inaccurate information. As a result, the objective of manipulation does not really begin with skewing the full mass of information itself, but rather in the process of “reorienting” a targeted individual or state to self-select or privilege certain information” (Fitzgerald, C.W & Brantly, 2017, page 235).

  1. Hi Majd, I find this topic extremely important, as we live in a world full of propaganda. It was really interesting to read how propaganda has changed, and how it is used nowadays. As you mentioned, the interenet has become an important part of our lives, and it is scary how different ideas and thought can be imposed by more sophisticated propaganda method.
